Soviet Army Monument

Attraction type: Monuments

The Monument to the Soviet Army was built in 1954 in Sofia. The monument is surrounded by a large park where many young people gather. The monument is located on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, near Orlov Most and the Sofia University.

It represents a soldier from the Soviet Army, surrounded by a woman and a man from Bulgaria. There are other, secondary sculptural compositions part of the memorial complex around the main monument.

The Soviet army monument is no stranger to graffiti, which pops right back up as soon as the monument is washed every spring.

But on the morning of June 18 2011, passers-by were treated to more than just the usual graffiti tags and anti-communist slogans. The sculpture composition at the base of the monument was painted overnight to turn the metal soldiers into well-known pop culture icons; the inscription below the composition proclaimed it to be “in step with the times”.
