The Cathedral of St Joseph is located 300 meters away from the center of Sofia city. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Sofia and Plovdiv, together with the Cathedral of St Louis in Plovdiv.
The cathedral was destroyed by the Allied bombing raids during World War II. It was rebuilt in its previous location between 2002 and 2006. The foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid personally by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Bulgaria in 2002. Four years later the cathedral was inaugurated on May 21st, 2006 in the presence of Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sofia has 350 seats and is capable of sheltering about 1,000 people. It is 23 m long, 15 m wide, and 19 m high, with the belfry reaching 33 m and having four electronic bells.
There is a small statue of Pope John XIII right at the entrance of the cathedral.
